Bats are much maligned and misunderstood inSociety. Often found with vampires, belfries, hair and bad days, the club has a mystique of fright, and is tragically misunderstood. Although the bats, like any other mammal, can carry rabies, and no one should ever touch a bat in nature, bats are an important part of our ecosystem. Austin bats migrate from Mexico each spring, and have their home under theCongress Street Bridge by the thousands since 1980. Female First of all, the bats come to Austin, their young tend to be early June. They remain in residence under the bridge usually until mid-October, and every night they leave their roost to feed the mosquitoes and flies and other insects in and around Austin.
Two points of view other than the open offer. Just below the bridge on the south side of the river is a dedicated park-like pattern expected from the adjacentAustin American-Statesman newspaper offices. Visitors can bring a picnic lunch on the grassy hill, and can read the published information on the history and future population of bats. Others prefer to go to the upper deck and secure a place overlooking the river, the eastern horizon. When the sun goes down, once the amount of one or two brave bats fibrillation observed in the dusk. The amount accelerates, and soon the air is thick with bats swirling out into the night. Visitors near the bridge isup close and personal with these fascinating creatures, but fast-moving flutter to watch. Those observed with a view to the horizon and columns transforms this sweet little deepening of the shadows of the twilight sky apart.
A number of boats available for hire of a Bat made of riverboats to public platform boats private, and the errant kayak, rowboat or canoe, sometimes rises and falls with the water of the river near the bridge.
